If you are a Honduran citizen or returning resident, you can import household goods and personal effects duty-free. You’ll need to provide evidence of your residence status and your items must have been owned for at least 6 months. The same applies to new residents who are relocating to Honduras. If you’re a non-resident, you will need to export the items before you leave or face charges. Rates vary depending on the type, condition and value of the item, but customs duties typically cost between 5% and 35%. There is also a sales tax (Impuesto Sobre Ventas) charged at 15%.

You’ll need to provide us with the following documents so we can get your items shipped and get them safely through customs. We’ll provide some of the documents and help you to complete them:

  • A copy of your passport including the visa page
  • Residency documents or proof of visa
  • A Bill of Lading which is issued by 1st Move International and highlights the contents of the shipment
  • An inventory list
  • Customs declaration form

All documents can be uploaded via our secure document transfer page.

UK citizens do not need a visa to visit Honduras for up to 90 days. Depending on the nature and length of your stay, you’ll either need to apply for one of the temporary or permanent residence visas. Most people move to Honduras on a Temporary Residence Visa, such as a Work Visa, and then apply for Permanent Residence. Here are the most common ways to move to Honduras.

Work Visa (Temporary Residence for Employment)

The work visa is for those who have a valid job offer from a company in Honduras.

Key Requirements:
  • A valid UK passport valid for 6 months from the date of entry
  • A completed Work Visa application form from the Honduran Consulate or the General Directorate of Immigration
  • A signed employment contract from a Honduras employer that is registered with the Ministry of Labor
  • Proof of your qualifications
  • Proof of financial stability until your job begins
  • A police clearance certificate from the UK to show the last 6 months

To learn more about the Work Visa, read more on the Globalization Partners website.

Permanent Residence Visa

To apply for permanent residency, you’ll have to have lived in Honduras on a temporary residency visa for 2 years. You can also apply for Direct Permanent Residency under categories including retirement, investor, or family reunification.

Key Requirements:
  • A valid UK passport with 6 months left past your arrival
  • A copy of your birth certificate translated into Spanish
  • A completed application form from the Honduran consulate or immigration office
  • Retirees who have a minimum income of $1,500 or
  • Investors who can invest a minimum of $25,000 into a Honduras business or
  • If your spouse or child is a Honduran citizen or permanent resident
  • A police clearance certificate from the UK

To find out more about Honduras visa, contact the Honduras Embassy in the UK.

You can move your pet to Honduras with you, but you have to meet certain criteria and ensure they are fit for travel:

Health Certificate:

You’ll need to get a Health Certificate from a licensed vet before the move. You will also need an international version which proves a health check was made within 10 days before travel.

Vaccinations:

Your pets must have the necessary vaccines. Dogs must have a rabies vaccine at least one year before travelling and be vaccinated against distemper and hepatitis. Cats should be vaccinated against feline panleukopenia, calicivirus, rhinotracheitis, and rabies.

Import Permit:

Dogs and cats require an Import Permit from the Dirección General de Ganadería y Veterinaria in Honduras .

Treatments:

Your pet must be treated against worms within 30 days before travelling.

Microchips aren’t a requirement, but always recommended for the safety of your pet.

Living in Honduras

The cost of living in the UK is 108% more expensive than in Honduras. Numbeo estimates that a family of four living in Honduras should expect to pay around £1,745.8 (L 57,138) in monthly living costs, not including rent. Rent prices are 233.5% higher in the UK, so along with lower restaurant and grocery prices, living in Honduras is much more affordable. A 3-bedroom apartment in the city will cost £415.20 (L 13,589.58) per month. The average monthly salary in Honduras is £419.40 (L 13,727.08), which is significantly lower than in the UK.

The public healthcare system in Honduras is mainly funded by the government, with some of the population paying social security contributions. A large part of the population lacks regular access to basic healthcare in Honduras, posing a challenge for the country. There is private healthcare in Honduras which is mainly used by wealthier residents and ex-pats. Due to the underfunding of the public healthcare system, many ex-pats opt to take out health insurance to cover private care costs if necessary.

Education is compulsory in Honduras from age 6 to 13. Secondary education is not compulsory, but highly encouraged to further learning. There are a few British schools, notably in San Pedro Sula. The British School of San Pedro Sula follows the English curriculum and students can study GCSEs and A-Levels. British schools are private establishments, so come with high costs. You can expect to pay between £3,645 and £8,100 in annual fees.

The economy is set to slow down in Honduras due to reduced demand for textiles and agricultural products, which make up the largest part of the economy. However, there is always a demand for roles in the agriculture, manufacturing and construction industries. British expats in Honduras will typically find employment in the education sector as English language teachers. The technology, project management and humanitarian sectors also attract many British citizens when looking for work in Honduras.
