Overall, Belize offers a lower cost of living than the UK does . Rent prices are more affordable, with a 1-bedroom apartment in the city costing between £300 and £600 (675 BZD-1350 BZD). In London, this would cost up to £2,500. Groceries cost 19% less, restaurant prices 50% cheaper and transport costs are 32% more affordable in Belize.

Healthcare in Belize isn’t as developed as other countries, so it only offers an adequate level of service for citizens and residents. Healthcare is either free or very affordable, depending on location and type of treatment. Private healthcare is also available in Belize which offers better quality facilities. Due to high private costs, many retirees and British expats chose to get private health insurance. If you need specialist medical care, you may have to travel to the USA or Mexico for more advanced services.

There are international primary schools available in Belize, following British and American curricula, which are mainly instructed in English. International schools come with high fees but are popular with expat families. The International School of Belize and St. John’s College High School are notable international schools.

Primary education is compulsory from age 5 to age 12. Students typically start high school at age 12-14, but after age 14, education is not compulsory in Belize. Many students choose to continue their studies with extra courses in secondary school. Students typically attend university at the age of 18 and popular institutes include The University of Belize and Belize Technical College.

The tourism sector is the biggest industry in Belize, with jobs in hospitality or tour guides on offer. Agriculture and manufacturing also help to make up the economy in Belize.
